Storyline:
Have you ever wanted to ski through the middle of town in a tutu? Have you ever wanted to run a marathon dressed like a viking? Have you ever looked at the snow and said, “that seems like the perfect weather to go bicycling?” Have ever burned an effigy to cleanse your town? Are you the best kind of dirtbag-artist-athlete hybrid with a little more passion than prudence?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’ve probably heard of Crested Butte, Colorado. If you answered yes to two of these, you’ve probably visited Crested Butte. If you answered yes to three, you’re probably FROM Crested Butte.
Crested Butte isn’t just a ski-town, it’s a quirky small-town experience that invites outdoor enthusiasts, creatives, and anyone else interested to participate in community-building activities that stray from the path of everyday experiences to ensure you’re doing more than passing time: you’re making memories.
Over a decade ago, Anheuser-Busch capitalized on this “up-for-whatever” philosophy. They took over their main street, renamed the town “Whatever, USA” for the weekend, brought in major entertainment acts, as well as 1,000+ contest winners, and pretty much had a weekend epic kegger. Some CB-ers loved it. Some hated it. But no matter the opinion, it made an impact.
In preparation for its 15th anniversary, the town has decided to resurrect their Whatever, USA identity, but do it themselves this time. And do it better. They’ll do it without selling out, with full transparency, open access, and celebrating what makes Crested Butte unique. In order to work up to the big 15-year celebration, they’re starting some of the events a few years ahead so they have practice and momentum. Their first new event is the “Highfolk Hootenanny Parade.” celebrating Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day.
Townsfolk have been preparing their floats for months, practicing with their unusual instruments for even longer, and are ready to parade down Elk Avenue showing off their new talents and associated costumes. The parade ends at Mountain Theater where the community has invited famous (weird instrument) performers to celebrate and show off their skills in a series of concerts.
At the end of the parade, the first ticketholders file into the theater in great expectation for this show of unusual talent. They wait with baited breath. Then waited some more. And more. Finally, the master of ceremonies, Alex Plane, comes running to the stage, announcing that everyone is dead!
The doors have been locked, and nobody is allowed to leave. But how did the performers die? And are you now subject to their same fate? Figure out what happened or else you fall to their same fate.
