Description
Courage comes in many forms. Soldiers can endure rancid pork, beans, and hardtack, but the threat of a Minnie ball—or the constant cold, wet, and bone-deep exhaustion—is another matter. Recruiters never mention that part.
It is 1863, and the First New Jersey Artillery is in turmoil. Their Paymaster, Major Silas P. Guildersleeve, was found stabbed to death in his tent at dawn. The payroll money is missing, and the guard outside had been asleep. This is especially disastrous: the men hadn’t yet been paid for last month after the previous payroll was lost during a river crossing accident. Rumors spread that fallen soldiers’ wages might be confiscated, adding fuel to resentment and talk of desertion.
The unit, regrouping near Possum Creek after days of hard fighting, now faces unrest within its ranks. Every soldier who crossed paths with Guildersleeve is under suspicion. Unless this mystery is solved, chaos—and desertion—may tear the unit apart.
